Applying for a Schengen Visa in UAE

How and Where to Apply for a Schengen Visa in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

The United Arab Emirates remain among the favorite destinations for world travelers, either for tourism or for business. In addition, its residents are also among the top travelers around the globe. The UAE is listed among the top 15 countries, the residents of which filed most visa applications at one of the Schengen embassies, for a visa to Europe in 2017.
Statistics of the European Commission show that almost 267K people from the UAE applied for a Schengen visa in 2017. Taking into account that since May 2015, UAE passport holders do not need a visa to enter any of the Schengen Countries, the number is much higher when it comes to the number of people that have visited the area.

Note: (Starting January 1, 2021, citizens of United Arab Emirates will have to apply for an ETIAS visa prior to their travel towards Europe, in order to be allowed to enter the territory.)

What documents do UAE citizens need to enter Europe?

Even though UAE passport holders do not need to be in possession of a Schengen visa in order to be permitted to enter the Schengen Area, they will still need to present some documents at the port of entry. The border officer is the one who gives the final decision whether they shall be permitted to enter or not.

How to Apply for a Schengen Visa in UAE?

There are a few simple steps to follow when applying for a short-stay Schengen visa in the United Arab Emirates:
  1. Check at which Embassy/Consulate you need to apply. In order to file your application at the right place, you will need to know which country should issue you a visa (if you are planning to visit more than one Schengen state). Then you need to check, what body of that particular country handles visa applications or whether it has outsourced visa submission to another party.
  2. Schedule an appointment at the embassy / consulate / visa center.
  3. Attend the visa interview. Take all of the required documents with you, listed in the given order.
  4. Wait for a response. In the meantime, the embassy will process your visa, which will go through EU security systems as Visa Information System and Schengen Information System.
The processing of your application may take up to 15 days. After that period, you will receive a response on your case. All applications are processed by the embassies only.

Where to apply for a Schengen Visa in UAE

A Schengen visa gives to its holder the opportunity to visit 26 European countries. However, when it comes to where one should apply, the Schengen countries have very strict and clear rules. Many applicants fail to understand where they should apply, and in absence of information, apply at the wrong embassy. Often, this may result in visa rejection, or the embassy where you applied will direct you to the right one.
However, this means you have already lost time, money and energy applying at the wrong one. That is why you should pay attention to three things before you file an application:
  • the number of countries you will be visiting
  • the number of days you will be spending in each
  • the country where you will step first, in case you visit more than one of the Schengen member states
After knowing the three things given above, then you will be able to decide where to apply, according to the following rules:
  • If you are planning to visit only one country – then you need to apply at the embassy / consulate / visa center of the country you will be visiting, in UAE.
  • If you are planning to visit more than one country – then where you need to apply depends on the number of days you will be spending in each of the countries you will step in.
    • When spending equal amount of days in each – then you need to apply at the embassy / consulate / visa center of the country where you will arrive first
    • When spending unequal amount of days in each – then you will need to apply at the embassy / consulate / visa center of the country where you will be spending more time
In general, most of the Schengen states have their embassy located in Abu Dhabi and at least a consulate general in Dubai. In some cases, the embassy and the consulate(s) of the respective member state accept visa applications. In other cases, visa submission is outsourced to the embassy / consulate of another country or to companies that offer visa services.
Following, find a list of the Schengen member states and their competent bodies for accepting visa applications, in UAE:

What should I do if my visa application is rejected?

Filing a visa application is not a guarantee that you will get the visa. There are a number of common reasons why a visa application is rejected by the Schengen embassies. Sometimes applications are rejected because of mistakes made during the visa interviews. Attempt to avoid them, since the interview is a crucial part of your application.
However, if you get rejected from getting a Schengen Visa in the UAE, you will always have the chance to appeal the decision. When you receive the decision on you application, you will also get the reasons for denial, and instructions how to appeal the decision, if you wish to. You can appeal this decision by writing an Appeal Letter for Schengen Visa Refusal.

UAE nationals to apply for EU Travel Authorization starting 2021

The European Union has been working for a long time now on the creation of an ‘electronic visa’. The European Travel Information and Authorization System, which comes into force on 2021, is an electronic system through which all those who have been traveling to Europe visa-free so far, will have to obtain a travel authorization.
As of January 1, 2021, these travelers will be obliged to obtain an ETIAS prior to showing up at the border. An ETIAS should be obtained online, by completing an application form with personal information and paying the fee of €7.
